Edgar L. Mehl

July 12, 1927 — July 22, 2017

Edgar Lawrence Mehl of Kansas City, MO passed peacefully to the Lord on July 22, 2017, surrounded by his family. Having turned 90 years old on July 12, Edgar lived a long and blessed life. He was born in St. Louis to Violet and Edward Mehl Sr., a few minutes after his beloved twin brother Edward Jr. who would never let him forget that he was first! They shared a special bond that was never broken.
Edgar lived most of his youth in Sedalia, MO with his parents and 5 siblings. Times were tough, but he often said he wouldnt have changed a thing. His Aunt Susie also helped raise he and Junior, and he spoke with love of her care. After graduating from Sedalia Smith-Cotton High School in 1945, Edgar joined the Navy and trained boot camp in San Diego before being deployed to Saipan at the end of World War II. He was extremely proud of his military service, told many colorful stories about this time in his life and wore a Navy baseball cap on most days.
After returning home from the Navy, Edgar would meet and marry the love of his life, Olive Beutler. They married on June 4, 1949 and for more than 63 years lived, loved and laughed until her death in February 2013. Ed and Olive were the shining example of love, marriage, parenthood, grandparenthood and devotion to God and family. He and Olive raised their family in Kansas City, MO and moved to Raytown, MO in 1973. In June of 2017 Edgar moved to an apartment at Brookdale Wornall Place, where he thoroughly enjoyed being "treated like a king" for the remainder of his life.
Edgar had a strong work ethic and held many various jobs in his life. He retired from the U.S. Post Office after 35 years, but worked at least 1 part-time job as well for his entire working life. He played football and baseball, excelling at first base for Vendo in the late 40s and early 50s. He was a huge sports fan and his part-time jobs included taking tickets for the As, Royals, Chiefs, Kings, Blues, the American Royal and every other opportunity that came along. When his children were young, he coached baseball at Southeast Baseball League and instilled a love of the game in them and in countless other youth.
He and Olive were active, long-time members of St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church in Raytown and he trusted and loved God with all his heart. He always felt especially close to St. Joseph and the Holy Family. If you knew Edgar, you loved him. It was really that simple.
Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, Violet and Edward Sr., his wife Olive, his sister Elizabeth Ross, his brothers Edward Jr. and Joseph and a beloved brother-in-law Richard Beutler. Edgar is survived by his children; daughter Kathy Wolff and son-in-law Donald, son David Mehl and daughter-in-law Sarah, daughter Ann Garrison and son-in-law Daryl, son Mark Mehl, grandchildren Libby Wolff and fiance Tasha Owens, Adam Mehl and wife Brittany, Mark Mehl, John Mehl, Drew Garrison and wife Ashley, Brian Garrison, Jess Hagen and fiance Drew, Corey Mehl, Nick and Anthony Pacheco, and great-grandsons Keane and Benson Garrison.
