Edward Thomas Sayers, 92, of Overland Park passed away peacefully on March 21, 2015 surrounded by his family. Ed was born on December 14, 1922 in Kansas City, KS. the son of Edward Thomas Sayers and Marie Halbauer Sayers. He graduated from St. Peter?s Grade School and Ward High School. During his senior year, Ed was selected as a member of the State of Kansas All Star Basketball Team. He was recruited to play basketball at KU under Phog Allen, but the war changed that plan.

During World War II he served as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps flying 11 bombing raids over Japan and China. After an honorable discharge Ed returned to Kansas City to continue his education. He graduated from Rockhurst College with one of the first degrees the school awarded in Business Administration while continuing his basketball career. The following day, January 31, 1948, Ed married the love of his life, Mary Kopp and that wonderful union lasted 67 years.

Ed and Mary enjoyed traveling and were incredibly involved in their grandchildren?s lives ? from picking up carpool to attending sporting events, coaching basketball, going fishing and teaching golf. Ed had a quick wit and loved to tease those he cared for.

Ed was passionately involved in many organizations. He was a charter member and past president of the Serra Club of KCK and spent a great deal of time with the young seminarians. He and Mary would travel to visit the young men offering their love and support. They were also among the founding group for the Catholic Charities Snow Ball which has grown to be one of the largest fund raisers in the Kansas City area.

Golf was a favorite pastime of Ed?s. Throughout the years he served as President of Milburn Country Club and Kansas City Seniors Golf Association. He also served on the advisory board for the KC Junior Golf Foundation.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Frank, his sister Betty and his great-grandson, Elliott Boren. Ed is survived by his wife, Mary, daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Jon Boren and grandchildren Jeff and Amy Boren, Sarah and Jason Forge and Scott and Rheanne Boren. He is also survived by the little lights of his life ? his great-grandchildren: Ethan, Kathryn, Anna, Adelynn, Caroline and Jack and his sister, Rose Pavicic.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Luke?s South and Kansas City Hospice House for the compassionate care they provided Ed. In lieu of flowers consider contributions to Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, The Serra Club of KCK or the Church of the Nativity.
