Fred Greusel, 92, died November 18, 2016 of natural causes at Villa St. Joseph in Overland Park Kansas. Born January, 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska, Fred lived most of his life in Kansas City, Missouri. He was married for over 60 years to his beloved wife Martha Ann (Davis), who preceded him in death in April, 2013.
A graduate of Omaha Central High School, Fred served in the U.S. Army during and immediately after World War II. He was with occupation forces in both Germany and Japan as part of the 97th Infantry Division. Benefitted by the GI Bill, Fred earned two bachelors degrees, one in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nebraska, and the second in Chemical Engineering at the University of Iowa.
Fred worked as a mechanical engineer for most of his career. He was a longtime employee of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, and also worked for a number of private firms in the Kansas City area. He and Martha were married in 1952, and he remained devoted to her until her passing in 2013. Fred and Martha leave behind two sons, John and David, who between them provided them with six grandchildren: Emily, Davis and Elizabeth (John); and Nick, William and Susanna (David).
A lifelong fan of the University of Nebraska, Fred enjoyed occasional golf, tennis, and family vacations to the Lake Okoboji area of northwestern Iowa. A disciplined investor, Fred followed the "buy and hold" approach of his high school classmate, Berkshire Hathaway vice chairman Charlie Munger, although he never owned a share of Berkshire Hathaway stock.
Fred will be remembered as an exceptionally devoted husband, family man, and a wonderful grandpa. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
