Gary P. Hugunin, Sr.

Gary P. Hugunin, Sr., 75, of Raytown, MO, passed away on July 26, 2017. Visitation will be on Monday, July 31st from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 9020 E. 51st Terr, KCMO 64133. Luncheon to follow. The burial will be held at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO, at 3:00 p.m.Gary P. Hugunin, Sr., was born on November 27, 1941 in Kansas City, MO to Jesse and Francis Hugunin. He grew up in Shawnee Mission, KS in a large family. He was the 10th of 11 children. Gary graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1959.He served in the US Navy from 1963 to 1965. He circled the world serving as a Personnel Clerk on CV-34, the USS Oriskany and CV-14 USS Ticonderoga. He crossed the International Date Line on March 10, 1964. He received an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon for his service with Heavy Attack Squadron Four in support of operations in the Gulf of Tonkin in August 1964. Gary married Mary Margaret Vanatta on January 14, 1967. They were blessed with 5 children and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January. Gary was very proud to celebrate this day with his wife and family. Gary's family includes five children, Gary Pat (deceased); Chris and Christy (spouse) and their children Myranda, Colin and Addison of Lee's Summit, MO, Tracey and Allie (spouse) of Independence, MO, Eric of Lee's Summit, MO, Jennifer and Justin Leffler (spouse) and their children Abby, Brock and Nora of Independence, MO. Gary is preceded in death by his mother and father, his 10 brothers and sisters, and his son, Gary Pat.He was always a hard-worker and carried up to 3 jobs at some points to provide for his family. Providing catholic education for his family was a priority for him and he made many sacrifices to make that happen. A large majority of his career was spent working as a master carpenter and cabinet-builder. In his spare time Gary enjoyed spending time in his workshop building furniture and treasures for his family and friends. These will be cherished for many years to come. Gary loved music and playing the piano. He had a natural talent that he shared with his siblings and sons. Gary was seen providing entertainment at many holiday and family celebrations. Gary also felt very drawn to God's beauty in nature. He loved spending family vacations camping, fishing, and hunting with this sons. This love of nature has been passed on to his children and grandchildren.Above all things, Gary just simply enjoyed being around family and friends, carrying on traditions, and having genuine conversations. He was always willing to listen and provide unconditional love and support to all those he knew.
