Gary Pickert, 60, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away February 14, 2016, surrounded and comforted by his family, after a long and private struggle against cancer. A Rosary will held on February 20th, at 9:00 a.m., with a Visitation following and Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Road, Leawood, Kansas 66206. A private inurnment will follow at the Pickert family cemetery plot at St. Boniface Church in Scipio, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Boniface Church.Gary was born June 12, 1955, the son of Virgil and Eleanor (Seck) Pickert, in Kansas City and was raised in Overland Park. He met his future-wife Kriste (Hatfield) in 1971 at a high-school football game and they were married in 1978. A tremendous baseball player and talented left-handed pitcher, Gary played baseball at Emporia State University after high school at Bishop Miege and Shawnee Mission South. After being drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 1976 MLB Amateur Draft, after his junior year of college, Gary decided to finish his degree. After graduation in 1977, he was drafted by the San Diego Padres and played professional minor league baseball across the country and in Mexico City until retiring from baseball in 1982. Gary then went on to have a successful career in business for over three decades, starting and running his own company, Garon Marketing. While his professional successes were many, his passions were always hunting, fishing, and spending as much time outdoors as possible, especially at the family farm near Scipio, Kansas, where Gary also spent many of his childhood summers.He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil in 2000 and Eleanor in 2012. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kriste and their three sons, a granddaughter and a grandson expected in June: Christopher "Tiffer" (girlfriend Tracy Rice), of Seattle, Washington; Andrew (wife Melanie), their daughter, Lucy, and expected son, of Overland Park, Kansas; and Tim (partner Sam Cook), of Chicago, Illinois; in addition to his three siblings Randy (wife Merrill), Larry (Marcia Mailliard), and Lisa; his mother-in-law Marlene Hatfield; and numerous in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and business associates.
