George Joseph McLiney, Jr, 87, was born July 14th 1937 to George McLiney and Ellen Dowling McLiney, and died unexpectedly on November 16th, 2024. George/Dad/Pop lived his life centered on God, family and gratitude. He enjoyed every moment and often commented on the “oasis” of love and family that surrounded him. He could be counted on by friends and family for good conversation, a witty retort and sage advice. He was the greatest man his family had ever known. He was fortified by his deep Catholic faith (daily communicant), loving family and a multitude of friends. George had the gift of eternal optimism and unceasing gratitude, crediting all of life’s blessings to our Father above.
Professionally, George began his long investment banking career with George K. Baum and Company but left in 1966 to create the firm of McLiney And Company (merging with SAMCO Capital Markets in 2019). He was joined at work by his children and numerous grandchildren, which brought him enormous pleasure. He was president and CEO of Star Cooler, a business started by his grandfather and uncles in 1895, and eventually sold it in 1978. He spent many hours on his Kansas property and was a successful cattleman.
Personally, no one brought more delight to George than his wife of 63 years, Laurie McCaskill McLiney. He often mused that marrying “Lar” was the best deal he ever made in his life. Their fun, banter, and pure joy of one another was a beautiful example to his entire family and large circle of friends. George gave generously of his time throughout his life to numerous organizations including those associated with his alma maters, Visitation, Rockhurst High School and Rockhurst University. He was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher and served on the diocesan finance board for many years. George leaves behind his beloved wife Laurie, his five children and their spouses, Eddie and Ann, Joey and Liesl, Mark and Jennifer (San Antonio), Amy and Duck Perry, Kevin and Pam. His 19 grandchildren Libby McLiney, Rachel Orscheln (Dustin), Maile Macdonald, Jenny Keenan (Tommy), Ford, Max, Jack, Mary Campbell, Josie, Meg Nestor (Steven), Ellie Logan (Jack), Kip Hart (Maggie), Mimi Gullapalli (Pawan), George Hart, Katie Wiewel (Jacob) Maggie Stiverson (Boston), Kevin, Abby (Paul Henton), Daniel and 14 great grandchildren. He leaves three siblings, Mary McLiney, Joe and Janie McLiney, Anne and Bud Cox. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in his memory to any of his three alma maters, Visitation, “The Laurie and George McLiney Family Scholarship” at Rockhurst High School or Rockhurst University.
