Gerald W. Browning

Gerald W. Browning, 78, passed away January 19th 2017. Mass will be held at 10am at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7230 Dale Ave., Richmond Heights, MO 63117 on Saturday January 28th. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to the Gerald W. Browning Award at the University of Missouri - Columbia or to Father Bob's Outreach at www.fatherbobsoutreach.com.
Gerald was born March 11 1938, the son of Gerald Sr. and Elizabeth (Hanlon) Browning, in St. Louis. He lived a life of academic and personal accomplishment, finishing Christian Brothers College, then continuing on to Xavier and St. Louis University where he obtained his B.S. in Physical Therapy and his M.Ed. in Special Education. He would continue on to The University of Missouri, Columbia where he would obtain his Ph.D. in Higher and Adult Education. MU would also be where he spent the bulk of his professional career, first becoming a professor, then in 1973 becoming the Director of the Physical Therapy program, and ultimately the Associate Director of Health Related Professions. He was an early academic in his field, licensed by the State Board Registry for the Healing Arts- Physical Therapist- License No. 00003. He dedicated himself to charitable works, distributing food to the homeless in Kansas City and doing relief work in post-Katrina New Orleans for The Red Cross, building homes in Belize with Hand In Hand Ministries, participating in The East Hill Singers Mens Choir with inmates from Lansing Correctional, Operation Breakthrough, Habitat for Humanity, Longview Farms Elementary and myriad others.
He had four children, daughters, Sarah Soden and Rebecca Bastow; sons, Joshua Browning and Daniel Browning with his former spouse Karen Browning. Their pride and joy were their four grandchildren Benjamin Soden, Samuel Soden, Elizabeth Bastow and Audrey Bastow. He is survived by all the former as well as his beloved sister Bonnie Buelle and her family. He was preceded in death by his parents.
