Grace Lucille Blando, a cherished soul who touched the lives of many, peacefully completed her earthly journey on July 16, 2023, at the age of 95. Born in 1927 to her loving parents, Giovanni Battista and Maria Blando who immigrated to the USA from Sicily, she carried their love and values throughout her life. Grace was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marie Bellante and her husband, Joseph, brother Emanuel Blando and his wife, Patricia. Additionally, preceding her was her lifelong partner, Maggie Pence, whom she held dear in her heart.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Mary Kay and Rich Culp, Courtney Blando Williams and her late husband Steve Williams, Connie and Jerry Euston, John and Madeline Blando, Bill and Elizabeth Blando, Tom and Clare Blando, Joe and Linda Blando, Jim and Christen Blando, Anne Marie Blando (deceased), Elizabeth and Dr. Joseph Spalitto, Mary Jo and John McNerney, Grace Bellante, Anita and Frank Janner and 38 great nieces and nephews and 71 great, great nieces and nephews.
Grace’s life began and ended in the same house in Kansas City, where she grew up surrounded by love and cherished memories. She pursued her education at KU and later became deeply involved in the family business, Superior Wines & Liquor. With unwavering dedication and determination, Grace successfully managed the company for many years, navigating the challenges of a predominantly male industry. She earned the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege of working alongside her. In 1998, when the family decided to sell the business, Grace retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and resilience.
Remembered for her quick wit, genuine warmth, and kindness, Grace embodied the essence of a “good Catholic” radiating love and hospitality to those around her and extending a helping hand to those in need. In her younger years, she found joy in bowling, displaying an enthusiastic and competitive spirit. A passionate supporter of Jayhawk basketball, Grace cheered fervently for her team. She also had a deep love for dogs and owned multiple generations of miniature schnauzers who were always by her side. Grace had an eye for the arts, attending summer classes at the Kansas City Art Institute and creating colorful landscapes inspired by her favorite local artist, Thomas Hart Benton.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to her exceptional caregivers, Tammy, Kerry, Mary, and Shannon, whose compassion and dedication brought comfort and joy to Grace’s final years. Also, thank you to the Catholic Community Hospice for assistance in the last few months of her life.
As we bid farewell to Grace Lucille Blando, let us hold dear the memories she created and the lives she touched. Her legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will forever be cherished in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
May her soul find eternal peace and may her profound legacy continue to inspire love and kindness in us all.
