H. Bernard Huhn

H. Bernard (Bernie, Uncle Bud) Huhn, 93 passed away on May 29, 2024. He was born on January 26, 1931 in Kansas City, Missouri. Bernard was the son of Martin Huhn, the groundskeeper at the Rockhill Club, and Etha Hawthorne Huhn.

Bernard attended EC White Elementary, Nelson Junior High and graduated from Paseo High in 1947. He then went onto Westport Jr. College. He attended University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO, and received commendation and master's at University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. Bernard joined the Army; he was assigned to the tennis team.

After he served his country, he started his career as a teacher. His first job was at a junior high in Pueblo, CO he taught there for a couple of years before moving back to the Kansas City area and settling in Overland Park, KS in 1963. He started teaching elementary schools in the Shawnee Mission School District; Sequoia, Cherokee and retiring from Shawnee after teaching there for 22 years out of his 39 years of teaching. After retiring he volunteered at Children’s Mercy Hospital NICU. He loved being a volunteer. He would often talk about the babies he held. Whenever a volunteer was needed, he was there. He received the title of Master Volunteer during his tenure there.

Bernie was also a tennis pro at Oakwood Country Club and at Kansas City Racquet Club, he also served as a bartender there when needed.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Florence Pace Nash, Alice Huhn Upton Justice, Shirley Huhn Wallace and brother Frances (Junior) Pace.

Bernard leaves his best girl Sugar, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

His great-nephews Joshua Flint and Jered Corben were there to greet him in heaven to show him the ropes.

Celebration of Life will be held on his birthday, Sunday, January 26th at 1 p.m. at Muehlebach Funeral Chapel, 6800 Troost Avenue, KCMO 64131.
