Joan M. Hughes

Joan Mildred Hughes, age 84 of Kansas City, died peacefully on January 28, 2016. Joan was born on December 13, 1931, in Tarentum, PA.She graduated from nursing school in Pittsburgh, PA, and later served as Chief Nurse, Allegheny Valley Hospital in Pittsburgh. She joined the United States Air Force as a Flight Nurse in 1957. She met her beloved husband, Jerry, at her first assignment at Webb Air Force Base, in Big Spring, TX. Married for a blessed 56 years, Joan traveled the world as a dedicated military spouse and friend and faithfully raised her surviving four children, Timothy, Michael, Patrick, and Kelley. She made every military house a home throughout their 30-year Air Force career.During her life, Joan touched many lives by her positive outlook, kind and patient heart, and her feisty and independent nature. Her zest for life centered on her family, faith, and friends. There was never a stranger Joan met. Most importantly, and indisputable, Joan's ultimate goals in her life were to be a loving, supportive wife and mother and faithful, loyal friend.Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Christopher and Mildred, and brother, Daniel. She is survived by her devoted husband and four children, seven grandchildren, twin brother John Schrott (Butler, PA) and sister, Lois Schnizler (Buffalo, NY).A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, February 2, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church 11822 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO 64131. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to either St. Thomas More Parish or Seton Center, 2816 E 23rd Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64127.
