John 'Jim' Hromek

July 2, 1941 — September 2, 2015

John (Jim) Hromek, 74, of Raytown, MO passed away September 2, 2015. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 9th, from 11:00 -1:00 pm followed by the funeral service at 1:00 pm at Muehlebach Funeral Home, 6800 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO 64131. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org). John (Jim) was born July 2, 1941, in Rockford, IL to John Sr. and Artsene Hromek. He attended public schools in Girard, KS. He later went on to proudly serve his Country in the United States Army. After serving in the military, John pursued his dream of driving for the largest over the road trucking company in America. After encountering several layoffs and the associated difficult times, he became adamant about becoming an independent over the road driver. Although money was difficult to come by, John (and his wife Judy) found a way to purchase their own Freightliner truck and trailer and pursue his dream of owning his own rig. He was proud to be independent and self-reliant. In the late 1980s, John decided that he had driven enough highway miles to last a lifetime and pursued an opportunity to work for the U.S. Post Office. John stayed with the Postal service for just over 20 years before retiring in 2009. John initially became ill in 2011 and underwent aggressive surgery along with chemotherapy and radiation. By 2012, his battle was rewarded with better health and he resumed normal activities. In early 2015 he was again diagnosed with a new cancer and underwent successful surgery. Sadly, in late July John began feeling ill and was eventually diagnosed with cancer. This time it was more aggressive and untreatable. John learned of the prognosis but remained upbeat and strong. Eventually, the disease took his life but failed to take his identity. Up until his final breath, he kept his sense of humor and never lost sight of his purpose as husband and father.John enjoyed playing Bingo, cooking BBQ, working on cars and doing yard work. He was a man that loved helping anyone who needed help. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Clayton Hugill in April this year. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Judy Hromek, his children; Annette Hugill, Robert Hromek, Kenneth Hromek , Cheryl Foster, Andy Lalumia and Shawna Hromek, as well as his grandchildren; Allison , Alex, Taylor, Patrick, Michael, and Lisa.
