Kathleen Gier

August 21, 1923 — July 30, 2016

Gier, Kathleen Hummel, 92, a lifelong resident of KCMO, died July 30, 2016. Born August 21, 1923 to August and Margaret (Heilman) Hummel, she was the fifth of six children. Kathleen married John Gier on October 9, 1948. She was a partner of Acme Brass & Machine Works, a company founded by her parents in 1914, until the company was sold. She joined the Northeast Cooperative Ministries in service to the poor in 1972. In 1973, she founded Cooperative Social Services (now Bishop Sullivan Center), serving as its first Director for 20 years. She was honored by the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph with the Order of Malta MVP Award in 2006. An active member of St. Augustine's parish until its closing, she then joined St. Peter's parish, serving as Eucharistic Minister and Lector. She was a member of the Sierra Club, Daughters of Isabella, Ladies of Charity and Altar Rosary Society. Beloved wife of John for 48 years until his death in 1996, she is survived by son Joseph (Sarah), daughter Amy Edsall, and grandchildren Peter, Andrew, and Abby Edsall, and Kevin and Molly Gier, sister Louise Renault, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Margaret, brothers Karl, John "Bud", Frank, and their spouses, and sister Mary Eileen. Visitation at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 701 E. Meyer Blvd., Sunday, August 14 at 2:30 PM followed by a Memorial Mass at 3 PM. Reception following in the parish hall. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Bishop Sullivan Center, 6435 East Truman Road, KCMO 63126 or Operation Breakthrough, 3039 Troost, KCMO 64109.
