It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorenza (Barbosa) Medina, aged ninety, on November 14th, 2024. Lorenza passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, in Atlanta, GA, where she had resided for the past 10 years with her son and his wife.
Lorenza was born on September 12, 1934, in Dewey, Oklahoma, to the late William and Petra Barbosa. She was one of seven sisters and one brother and maintained strong family ties, often visiting relatives in Leon, Mexico, where her beloved aunt, uncle, and their ten children lived. Lorenza was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, known for her compassion, wit, and wisdom. She dedicated her life to her family and community, always putting others before herself, and her kind and generous spirit touched the lives of everyone she met.
She enjoyed a fulfilling career with Southwestern Bell, dedicating 33 years to the company. Lorenza and her husband raised their four children—three sons and one daughter—in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1977, they moved the family to a 40-acre farm in Freeman, Missouri, where she enjoyed the peaceful life, she had always yearned for. Lorenza had a deep love for dogs and rescued many during her time on the farm. She also played a significant role in raising her granddaughters, Juliet, and Brittany Medina, and was always ready to support any family member in need.
A devout Catholic, Lorenza was deeply involved in the Marian devotions and the healing ministry of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal for eight years during her early retirement. For over twenty years, she committed herself to feeding the pilgrims at the annual Shrine of San Juan de los Lagos in Mexico.
Lorenza was preceded in death by her parents, William, and Petra Barbosa; her brother, Louis Barbosa; her sisters, Mary Rodriguez, Catherine Whiteman, Carmen Garcia, Teresa Rocha, and Delores Barbosa; her son, Jon Medina; and her husband, Jesse Medina Sr. She is survived by her sons, Jesse Medina Jr. (Debbie) in Atlanta, GA and Joe Medina in Overland Park, KS; her daughter, Jacqueline Sikich (Jason) in Chicago, IL; her sisters, Alice Hilt and Estela Ben Ali; her granddaughters, Juliet Medina, Brittany Medina, and Alexis Medina; her grandson, Mason Sikich; and many nieces and nephews.
Lorenza’s legacy of compassion, kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and friends.
