Mary E. (Irons) Cook

November 5, 1919 — February 21, 2023

Mary Elizabeth (Irons) Cook, 103, passed away February 21, 2023. Mary was born November 5, 1919 to Porter Virgil and Mary Elizabeth Wisby in Kansas City, MO. She was the oldest of 3 children, one brother, one sister. Mary graduated from Central High School. While in high school she was involved in basketball, baseball, soccer, and singing in Glee Club.


Mary retired in 1974 from the Department of Agriculture after 30 years in the civil service of the US government. She was a member in the Grand Chapter of Missouri Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years serving as an officer in one capacity or another for many of those years.


Mary was very active at the North Kansas City Senior Center activities and trips. She was known there as the smiling, traveling lady. Most any mode of travel was alright with her. She was an avid card player and learned to play Mahjong in her later years. She was a member of the senior Thespians at the NKC Senior Center for a few years. She loved to read, knit, read, sew, read, cross-stitch, read, and crochet and learned to weave at the age of 97. She loved to read.


She is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, J.W. Irons and Ray Cook; her brother, Walter V Wisby; and her sister Alpha M Fiske. She is survived by her niece Virginia (Ginny) Gunter of Plattsburg, MO; her niece Lisa Slaughter (Doug) of Omaha, NE, nephew Woody Fiske (Mardi) of Omaha, NE, many more nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, and many, many friends. She will be sadly missed.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's honor to Children's Mercy Hospital, Memorial Contributions, 2401 Gillham Rd., Kansas City, Missouri, 64108.
