Maxine Garrett Myers

Maxine Garrett Myers was born on September 19, 1935 in Yahola, Oklahoma. She was the first of two children born to Eunious "Toy" and Pearl Garrett. In 1937, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where they became active members of the Friendship Baptist Church; and where she professed her faith and was baptized at the age of 12.

Maxine was educated in the public school system of Kansas City, MO, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1953. She attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO and received a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration; as well as her teaching certification. She later obtained her Master?s Degree from Emporia State College in Emporia, KS and Vocational Education Certification from the Missouri Department of Vocational Education in Sedalia, MO.

On February 16, 1958, she was united in marriage to Raymond Myers. To this union, three children were born: Michele, Byron and Rai. Maxine was blessed with four grandchildren that were her pride and joy.

She was an educator with the Kansas City, MO School District for 42 years. She taught both elementary and secondary students at Kumpf Elementary, Central High School, Lincoln High School, The Kansas City Technical Education Center and Westport High School. She had fond memories and formed lasting relationships with her students and fellow teachers and staff. She retired from her position as an educator in December 2000, but continued to work for the school district in the Kansas City Public School Retirement System until her health began to fail.

Maxine was a proud and active member of the Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She enjoyed her affiliation and was a member of the Kansas City Lincoln University Alumni Association, and the national chapter.

Maxine was an active member of the St. Monica Catholic Church, where she served three terms as the Co-Chairman of the Pastoral Council, a team member of the Generations of Faith Program, the Director of Religious Education, and many other organizations in the faith community.

Maxine leaves behind to love and cherish her memory: her husband, Raymond Myers; three children, Michele Jones (Tony), Byron Myers, and Rai Myers; four grandchildren, Devin Myers-Putman, Anthony Jones, Travis Jones, and Apryl Myers; one sister, Bettye Garret Young; one uncle, Reverend P.T. Rentie; one aunt, Ruby Fumby; four nieces, Allison Young-Silvers, Sylvia Cook, Jackie Guy, Diahann Strickland; two nephews, Melvin Thomas and Christopher Thomas, and a host of great nephews, nieces, family, and friends.

Visitation will be 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 31 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 1616 Paseo Blvd, Kansas City, MO; followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3 at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Monica Food Pantry, 1616 Paseo Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64108.
