Deacon Michael Joseph Dennis of Leawood, Kansas and formerly of Grandview, Missouri was called to his heavenly home on February 11th, 2024. He was 77 years old and passed peacefully with family present.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Rosemary Dennis. Those left to cherish his legacy are his beloved wife of 54 years Cathy McCullagh Dennis; children, Scott Dennis and wife Misun, Chris Dennis and wife Jody, his siblings Patsy Hybarger (George) and Marilyn Daniel (Jim). Mike was known as Poppa to 6 adoring grandchildren Lucy, Sophie, Charlie, and Matthew; Harper and Brynn. He is also survived by 3 nephews and one niece as well as many dear friends.
Mike was born on January 20th, 1947 in Independence Kansas. He attended St. Andrew School, graduated from Independence High School as valedictorian in 1965, and earned undergraduate and masters degrees from the University of Kansas. He worked for Black and Veatch for 30 years as a civil engineer and then as a private consultant before he retired to pursue a full time diaconate ministry. He was ordained in 2009 and served in this capacity at Coronation of our Lady Catholic Church until his passing.
As a deacon, he served at the altar, performed gravesite services, baptisms and weddings, established Holy Hour Adoration, and ministered to the sick, elderly, and homebound. He also served as Deacon for Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats and as Chaplain for the SEKC Serra Club. He touched many with his compassion and the generosity of his time spent making each person feel special. He loved God, and he loved the Church!
Mike will be remembered as a humble, gentle, and caring soul. He loved his family and just wished they could all live next door! He cherished his moments with both sons and their families. Hobbies included supporting his favorite teams—the Royals, Chiefs, Jayhawks, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With his wife, he enjoyed travelling and many years of ballroom dancing.
Mike’s family appreciates very much the 16 weeks of service provided by Catholic Community Hospice and Home Care.
