Peter E. Shields, 63, of Kansas City, MO passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, October 23, 2016. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 29th from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm at Muehlebach Funeral Care, 6800 Troost Ave, KCMO. The family invites you to come celebrate Peter and all the things that he enjoyed. We will be having a toast in his honor, with his favorite Irish Whiskey. Peter was born in Fort Mead Army Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland and spent his early years in Springfield, Massachusetts, before moving to Kansas City in 1969.He was a graduate of Southeast High School, Penn Valley Community College and University of Missouri, Kansas City.He worked for the Social Security Administration for over 36 years before retirement. While working for the Social Security Administration, he was also an active union steward and officer of American Federation of Government Employees Local 1336. After retirement from the government, he worked part time for a Mid Continent library branch.Peter loved hockey and was a season ticket holder to some of Kansas City's minor league franchises. He was a particular fan of the New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League.Peter enjoyed baseball and was a fan of University of Missouri sports.He also collected and enjoyed Marvel comics.Peter was a voracious reader. He was also a great fan of the British science fiction series Doctor Who.Peter taught many classes at Communiversity, from science fiction to fantasy to vampire lore.Peter is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary, and daughter Bridget of the home, son Edward Shields of Columbus, Ohio and a brother, Paul Shields of Baltimore, Maryland. Other survivors include 3 sister in laws, Peggy Sanborn, Patricia Faunt and Theresa Moran, 2 nephews, Brandon McKean-Shields and Conor (Hannah) McKean-Shields, 2 nieces, Erin Sanders and Katie Shields, 1 great niece, Ashley Sanders and 2 great nephews, Elijah McKean-Shields and William Sanders.Memorial Contributions may be sent to Piermont Public Library - Attn: Joyce, P.O.
