Porter O'Brien

January 31, 1930 — December 3, 2015

Porter OBrien, 85, passed away December 3, 2015 knowing he was surrounded by his loving family. Porter was born January 31, 1930 in Kansas City, MO to T. Fred and Martha Porter OBrien. He grew up in Lathrop, MO. He received a BS in English at Rockhurst College in 1952 where he lettered in basketball and football, and served as senior class president. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed as a commissioned officer on the USS Philip in Hawaii. He later earned his law degree at Georgetown Law School and was an editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. Porter practiced tax law before turning his energies to working as an assistant prosecutor for the Jackson County, Missouri Circuit Court. His greatest accomplishment was always his loving family. Whether he was coaching sports, praying the rosary, or taking the family on vacations, he left a legacy of perpetual devotion rooted in love of God and family. He enjoyed his daily walks saying the rosary, and was a fourth degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Porter was always lending a helping hand, whether it was trusting in Gods providence as he assisted a stranded motorist, or walked a homeless person to get a meal. Ever the faithful and devoted husband, proud dad and grandfather, he was a humanitarian who loved his Irish heritage and country. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John OBrien. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn OBrien; children, Libby OBrien, Jackie Marquardt and husband Andrew, Mike OBrien and wife Kathy, David OBrien and wife Kim; and grandchildren: Kyle, Ben and Cori Liebnitz; Sarah, Andrew, and Maddie Marquardt; Maggie, Sean, Katie, and Molly OBrien; and Johnny, Jake, and Patsy OBrien. The Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm Wednesday, December 9th at St. Thomas More Parish, 11822 Holmes Rd., KCMO, followed by Visitation until 6pm. Mass of Christian Burial will follow the Visitation at 6pm. Inurnment with military honors will be 1:00 pm Thursday at Resurrection Cemetery in Kansas City, MO.
