Priscilla D. Carr

December 9, 1924 — August 10, 2017

PRISCILLA JEAN "PAT" DOWNING WINCHESTER CARR
Pat Carr died peacefully August 10, 2017 with her daughters by her side. She was born in Long Beach, CA December 9, 1924 to Ethel Margaret Scott and Harold Woodford Downing. She met her first husband, John A Winchester in San Diego where he was a Navy medic and she worked in the Naval Hospital. A fond memory was meeting FDR when he visited the Hospital.
She raised three children in Kansas City, Mo, all of whom survive her: John A Winchester (Gera) of Arlington Texas, M. Patrice Winchester and Anne M Winchester. She leaves four surviving grandchildren, Albe and Lucas Sells, Carly and Lily Winchester and her great grandson, Milo Winchester-Smith. Her second husband of 39 years, Francis Joel Carr predeceased her in 2015.
Pat and Joel traveled to every state in the Union, following her meticulous mileage calculations and travel schedule. They visited Canada and Mexico multiple times as well as France, England, Ireland, the Panama Canal, Alaska and Hawaii. Before dementia claimed her mind, she was a voracious reader, a painter, a crossword puzzle master, accomplished bridge player and liberal activist protesting the Vietnam War and advocating civil rights equality. She was especially proud of her Scotch-Irish ancestry and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Before retiring, she was the long-time bookkeeper at Bishop Hogan High school, where she made many life-long friends. In accord with her wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes scattered at the Grand Canyon
Memories define us but for almost twenty years, our Mother could remember only the moment, as dementia meticulously chipped away memories of her life. But there were some things she never forgot:
The Pacific Ocean along California that she knew she was seeing for the last time when she visited her granddaughter, Albe, in 2005.
The mountains of Colorado and her childhood with her mother and brother, Jim.
Her children, whose names she might forget, but whose presence assured her she was safe and loved.
Rest in peace, Mom.
