Robert 'Bob' Charles Donovan

Robert Charles Donovan, age 90 ¾, died Friday morning September 4th in his sleep as a result of Alzheimers/Lymphoma. Mass and Visitation will take place Saturday 9/12 at Christ the King Church. Visitation will be at 9am, Mass at 10am. Lunch will follow the service.Bob was born December 1, 1924, in Kansas City, to Ronald Thomas and Ethel Mary (Carpenter) Donovan. He attended Southwest High School for three years; graduated from Ruskin High School in 1943 and was drafted immediately and sent to Fort Leavenworth, KS for training as a Lineman. Bob served in the Western Pacific, Saipan, Okinawa and Iwo Jima for which he was awarded three Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on 1/31/1946. Following a year at Benedictine College, he worked until the Korean War began. He joined the Naval Reserve and served as a Tab Machine operator at the Naval Station in San Diego until October 2, 1952. Bob was always a willing worker and volunteered as an Assistant Scout Master for the Visitation Troop, and he was awarded an Honorary Membership in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He attended Rockhurst College on the GI Bill. He was also a coach of the baseball team at the Jewish Community Center. Marriage to Mary Therese Cichaski in 1958 encouraged his "handy-man" talents in maintaining the family home in Brookside as well as later in Ward Parkway Estates.His employment was in the computer field for TWA and subsequently for Standard Oil/AMOCO where he stayed until retirement in 1985. He kept busy meeting and greeting at Waldo Hardware Store until his health intervened. The surviving members of his family are: Michael (Jeanne), John (Linda), Paul, and his sister; Sister Mary Ann Donovan CSJ. Grandchildren are Bridget, Lauren, Kathryn, Sean and Kiera. Both parents and his brother, Jim, preceded him in death.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, 11901 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO 64114, Catholic Charities Food Pantry, or a favorite charity of the donor's choice.A special THANKS to the staff at St. Luke's Hospice and the folks at Visiting Angels for their support and consideration in the last few weeks of his life.
