Bob was born May 28, 1942, in Bismarck, ND to Homer and Ruth (Hepperle) Slater. They moved to Kansas City, MO where he attended Hale Cook elementary school, Southwest HS, KC Junior College and MU at Columbia. He worked as an instructor at Wayne State University and as a claims authorizer at the Social Security Administration where he met his wife, Joyce.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Ruth Slater, his brother, James Slater and his son, Kyle Slater.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce and their daughter, Andrea Bezek (William), grandsons Alexander Bezek (Dr. Kitty Goldsby), Gabriel Bezek and Michael Bezek (Summer Baxley), Sisters-in-law, Nancy Slater, Barbara Johnson, Margaret Kensinger (Bill), Donna Yeager (Chris), Gloria Jaros (Sharon Brown) and brother-in-law, John Johnson (Linda), many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and best friends from work and school.

He was kind and gentle and shy, frugal but generous, loving and loyal. Everyone liked Bob. He was just a very sweet and understanding man. Andrea and Kyle were special children to him. Through them he could become a kid again. Grandchildren are always a gift, and he loved his dearly.

MU tiger “stuff” filled the house. He loved his MU tigers, though he would watch just about any football, basketball or baseball game. Handball was his sport until he had to have a few joints replaced.

He loved to read everything from Mad Magazine to archeology to mysteries to his favorite German newspaper (He was fluent in German), history to the funny papers. Some characters he was drawn to were Marvin the Martian and Snoopy.

Animals were his friends, especially dogs, cats and birds.

He will be greatly missed because he was greatly loved.

We want to thank Ascend Hospice for the gentle care they took of him in his last weeks. The employees at Brookdale College Square were extra special in their love for him. They were like family. There was so much support from family and friends. We could not get through this without the love.

We ask that you consider a donation to The St. Elizabeth Boy Scout Troop #150 or the charity of your choice in Bob’s name.
