Ruth was born July 16, 1912, to Louis and Anna (Campbell) Platt, in Kansas City, MO. She was a lifelong member of St. James Church. A skilled seamstress, Ruth fashioned clothing, often unique designs, for her customers. She made hundreds of school uniforms for parochial students and was especially proud of the suits she made for her husband. For many years, she served as the secretary at St. Peter?s School, where she ran an efficient office and also comforted and counseled students and teachers. She later turned her talents to creating miniature furniture and teddy bears and was a docent at the KC Miniature Museum. She graduated from St. Vincent?s Academy in 1930 and later studied at Avila and Rockhurst universities. Always ahead of the curve, she was the first in the family to own and use a computer.
Ruth wanted her children and grandchildren to follow their dreams. "You can do whatever you want, if you want to badly enough" was her mantra of encouragement.
Her husband Lee, whom she married in 1934, and her sons-in-law, Bob Vincent and Willard Van Horne, precede her in death. She is survived by her children, Anola Pickett (Peter Doyle), Bill Pickett (Marilyn), Terry Pickett (Margaret), Mary Pickett Vincent, Tom Pickett, Louisa Van Horne, 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. Her beloved cat, Gertie, will also miss her. Rather than flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Kansas City Miniature Museum, Brookdale Hospice and St. James Place. The family is extremely grateful to Brookdale Hospice and the staff of Freedom Pointe for their loving care.
