Steven Edward Mendenhall

Steven Edward Mendenhall, age 27, passed away at his home in Leawood, Kansas on Monday, February 20, 2017, after a long battle with mental illness. He was born on July 13, 1989, in Overland Park, Kansas to Carol (Sniezek) and Steve Mendenhall. Steven attended Nativity Parish School and was a 2007 graduate of Rockhurst High School. He studied biochemistry at Kansas State University. Steven was a remarkably bright and precocious child and will be remembered with a constant smile on his face. Music was Stevens heart and soul. He began playing the piano at the age of five and became accomplished in both Classical and Jazz. Steven also taught himself to play the guitar and harmonica. If he wasnt on the piano or the guitar, he was outside participating in a myriad of activities from riding his bike, fly fishing, or hunting with his father and brothers. He loved team sports and participated in both soccer and baseball. He was an avid sports fan cheering on his local teams, Sporting KC, the Kansas City Chiefs, and of course the Kansas City Royals and their World Series Championship in 2015. Family and friends will remember Steven fondly for his compassion of others, but especially for the personal care that he gave to his grandparents in their later years. Steven was a member of The Church of the Nativity, Knights of Columbus and could be found with a smile on his face behind the fryers at every Lenten Fish Fry. His struggle with mental illness and his brave fight against it should be viewed as an opportunity to educate others and fight for progress for this very cruel and highly misunderstood disease. For Steven, he is now at peace with the Lord. Steven is survived by his parents, Carol and Steve; sister, Jennifer; two brothers, Joseph and Daniel; and remembered by his large extended family and many dear friends.
