Suda Henrietta "Etta" Dittman passed away Saturday, June 18, 2016, at the Kansas City Hospice house in South Kansas City.
Born in Redbird, Missouri on February 9, 1928; Etta was one of 11 children born to Tandy and Suda Jane Scantlin. Being the youngest girl, with eight older brothers, Etta bragged that her mother "spoiled her rotten". But during the Depression, Etta began her work life at age 13. After World War II, in a shoe factory in their home town, Etta met Sergeant William Charles "Bill" Dittman in the spring of 1947. Bill was a veteran of the war in the Pacific, stationed (most notably) on the Island of Tinian at the wars conclusion. They were married June 21, 1947. Their union endured for 59 years; ending in Bills death in April, 2007.
Bill and Etta reared three children, Elizabeth Jo, John Henry and William Tandy Dittman. John passed away in 2012. Etta was grandmother to and is survived by Lisa Michelle Fike, Janel Marie Younger, John Quentin Dittman and Karl Anthony Dittman. She was great-grandmother to nine and great-great grandmother to one.
Etta was a lifelong member of the (now) United Methodist Church. She participated in the United Methodist Womens "circle" at the Lees Summit UMC and was hailed for her delicious, scratch-baked cinnamon rolls and other confections. Etta was a talented seamstress, a Girl Scout leader and a one-time sales representative for Watkins products. Etta loved children and spent many years working at the Lees Summit R7 School District and at La Petite Academy. In her prime, she was practically tireless.
Most of all, Etta will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and friend. She was a proud American, who exemplified the good people of Lees Summit, Missouri; where she made her home for 50 years.
The Dittman family requests that donations be made in Ettas name, to the Kansas City Hospice. We will be forever grateful for their support, during a most heartbreaking time.
