Cross-Lines Community Outreach, 736 Shawnee Ave., Kansas City, KS 66105 or to the Countryside Christian Church.
Vernetta was born November 21, 1924 in Kansas City, MO to Charles Virgil and Lillian Cross. Vernetta had an older brother, Alvin Lloyd Cross, who passed away from polio at the age of 13. She graduated from Northeast High School and married the love of her life Harold "Smitty" Schmidt. During World War II, Smitty was briefly stationed in Kansas City and they met at the Pla-Mor Amusement Center when Vernetta fell while roller skating and was helped up by Smitty. They wrote letters to each other throughout the war and were married on April 6, 1946. They were married for over 70 years. Together they raised their four children and were blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren all of whom she loved dearly. Vernetta focused on raising, guiding and loving her children and subsequently she made her everlasting impression on both her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She provided childcare for many others throughout the years providing the same love and guidance as she had to her own immediate family.
Faith, family and friendship were the most important things to Vernetta. She was actively involved in her church and giving back to the community. Her family and friendships meant so much to her. She delighted in the accomplishments of each family member and was the family matriarch to all. She was fun loving and the moral compass of the family. She touched so many throughout all stages of her life. Her immediate friends were the close sisters that she never had.
We will miss her dearly, but her ageless spirit will live on forever in us.
