Walter Leroy Smith of Lee's Summit passed away April 16, 2015, at the John Knox Care Center. Walter was born April 23, 1918, in Butler, Missouri, but grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, attending Kensington Grade School and East High School, graduating in 1936.Walter was an Army veteran, serving in Normandy and Battle of the Bulge campaigns. He was drafted into the Army as a private and was discharged as captain four years later. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Teamsters Retiree's Club, and Old Mission Methodist Church.After high school, he worked at Lowe and Campbell Athletics Goods Co., then after the war he worked at Country Club Dairy/Fairmont Foods.He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and six sisters. He is survived by his wife Cleta; his sister Betty Morton of Urbana, MO; two sons: Stephen & Margaret of Lee's Summit, Missouri, and Douglas of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren: Bryan Smith of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Dr. Melissa Smith/Anthony Montes of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Brad Smith/Valerie of Severna Park, Maryland, Chad Smith/Taylor of Austin, Texas, Amy Melsa/Luke of Austin, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.Services will be at Muehlebach Funeral Home Wednesday, April 22 at 11:00 am, with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Lee's Summit Historical Cemetery.
