William Y. 'Bill' Eubank, Md

December 30, 1927 — July 3, 2017

William Y. (Bill) Eubank M.D. 89, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away July 3, 2017. Born December 30, 1927 in Mexico, MO to Carr Neil and Helen Eubank. Bill was a lifelong Kansas City resident attending Border Star Elementary and Southwest High School (Class of 1945) where he played football. He attended University of Colorado where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He then volunteered for the Army and served in Japan from 1946-1947, returning to CU graduating in 1949. During his time in Colorado, he was a member of the Gymnastics team where in the off season he kept in shape rock climbing. This led to a lasting love of the mountains and future expeditions throughout North and South America. Bill graduated Cum Laude from Washington University School of Medicine after which, he served as Chief Resident of University Services at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Bill married the love of his life, Helen "Missy" Eubank, in 1953 and returned to Kansas City to raise three children and begin private practice with Don Black for the next 35 years at Research Medical Center. He was a founding member of Kansas City Internal Medicine. His fortunate patients would see him first thing in the morning and again before he returned home, 12 hours later with his little black bag. During this period, he was President of the Kansas City Heart Association, Chief of Department of Medicine at Research Medical Center, President of Medical Staff Research Medical Center, a long term Board Member of Research Health Services and The Research Foundation and Clinical Instructor in Internal Medicine for UMKC until retirement in 1992. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (medical honorary society), Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and received the Distinguished Service Award from Research Medical Center.
While living as a flatlander, Bill had a lifelong passion for the mountains. He remains listed in Rocky Mountain climbing journals for his exploits throughout Colorado, but most notably on Longs Peak where he served as a Park Ranger during the summers. He was an early member of the famed Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and is credited with making the first free climb of Longs Peak via "the Window Route". He climbed in Wyoming, Colorado and while in British Colombia he made a number of first accents. He served as Medical Officer on expeditions to the Cordillera Blanca in Peru and to Aconcagua in Argentina. He built one of the finest collections of climbing books in the country. An avid photographer as well as a bird watcher, Bill could whistle various bird calls with uncanny skill.
He was a member of the Kansas City Society of Internists, American Society of Internal Medicine, American Alpine Club, Mission Hills Country Club, Vanguard Club, Village Presbyterian Church and Quintiles Institutional Review Board. A good athlete, Bill enjoyed golf, tennis and biking as well as family vacations to the Rockies. He was also a lover of classical music, jazz and wine.
Bill is survived by his three children; Chris Eubank (Susan), Lisa Glassman (Steve) and Marcie Altomare (Robert), seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his sister Dorothy "Dottie" Lewis of Delaware, Ohio, and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Missy Eubank on May 2, 2017. The family wishes to express special thanks to all at Home Care Assistance, especially Loretta and Dora.
