Our Story

A Family Tradition

In January of 1954, James V. "Bud" Harrington broke ground for Muehlebach Funeral Home, the name Muehlebach was very visible in Kansas City. The Muehlebach Hotel, Muehlebach Beer, and Muehlebach Field were a strong presence in town. Since the name was so recognizable, Harrington decided to call his new funeral home by his mother's maiden name, Muehlebach, as a tribute to her.

In June 1954 Bud Harrington opened the doors of the new Muehlebach Funeral Home to serve the neighborhoods near 68th and Troost Ave.

At that time there were very few businesses in what is now known as the Southtown and Brookside areas. Through the years the area has grown and matured, and as the community grew, so did the number of families selecting Muehlebach Funeral Home to help them in their time of need. Within a few years, the first of several additions and renovations were made to the original building. These improvements were recognized in the community as an indication of Muehlebach Funeral Home's dedication to the area.

Also in 1954, Bud Harrington began selling prearranged funeral plans, one of the first to do so in the United States. The idea took hold in Kansas City and throughout the country.

James S. "Jim" Harrington joined his father's business in 1963 and 1977 and was named president of the funeral home. He bought the business in 1995. Jim continued his father's legacy of providing professional and personal service to the families and the community. Unfortunately, his father passed away in 2002.

In July 2003, Steve and Nicole Pierce took over the ownership of the funeral home. It was important to Jim Harrington that Muehlebach Funeral Home remains an independent and family-owned funeral home.

Steve and Nicole continue to carry on the tradition of the utmost professionalism and personal service that Muehlebach Funeral Home is known for.
